CARMEL HIGHLANDS, Monterey County — October 28, 2026. A 13.2-acre grassland and fire-fuel management project is proposed for Guerrin’s Ranch in the backcountry of Palo Corona Regional Park. Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District filed an environmental notice on September 16, 2026, describing work designed to reduce flammable invasive plants while supporting native grasslands.

Where is Guerrin’s Ranch?

The official project record identifies land within Palo Corona Regional Park, near Corona Road and Highlands Road in the unincorporated Carmel Highlands area. The work is on the park’s enclosed pastoral paddocks; it is not a claim that homeowners across Carmel Highlands must clear 13.2 acres of their own private property.

What is being removed or reduced?

According to the district, crews would focus on reducing invasive French broom (Genista monspessulana), a dense shrub that can contribute to wildfire fuel accumulation. Mechanical mowing and mastication would generally target vegetation toward a height of about six inches, particularly during the plant’s growing season to limit reseeding. Some coyote brush may also be thinned while keeping an open mosaic that supports habitat.

What equipment is contemplated?

The notice lists light tractors, masticators, trailered chippers and smaller tools such as brush cutters and trimmers. The agency also describes the possibility of removing individual invasive plants by their roots in sensitive areas. Cut material may be chipped or spread in place with limits on accumulation depth. No new road construction is announced by this project filing.

How would this help wildfire response?

The park district identifies lower fuel loads, improved grassland conditions and better access along an existing fire road as project objectives. It says the work is intended to reduce the likelihood of rapid fire spread from the park and assist firefighters. No vegetation project guarantees a community is fireproof; household preparedness and official evacuation instructions remain necessary.

What has the state approved?

The September 16 document is a Notice of Exemption under emergency project provisions, following wildfire-risk declarations and relevant agency authorizations. The filing describes the permitted planning framework, but it does not give a verified October construction-completion date or live trail-closure list. A separate, larger Animas Unit project elsewhere within Palo Corona has its own record and is not part of the 13.2-acre figure.
